Best time to travel

Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa all lie in the dry zone and are at their best from February to July, when the ancient stupas and rock terraces are dry and the light is clear. Kandy, at the journey's end, is comfortable year-round, with the heaviest hill-country rain confined to the south-west monsoon of May to September.

Packing list

  • Lightweight breathable clothing for coast and lowlands
  • A warm layer for hill country evenings
  • Modest attire for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered)
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals

  • Camera and binoculars for wildlife safaris
