Ella is a small mountain village that has quietly become one of the most beloved corners of Sri Lanka — a place of dramatic viewpoints, hidden waterfalls, and the iconic Nine Arches Bridge appearing through the mist below.
Set on the eastern edge of the hill country, Ella looks out over Ella Gap toward the plains beyond. The village itself is walkable and unpretentious; the surrounding trails, tea gardens and viewpoints are its true attraction. Boutique retreats now hide among the hills, offering some of the island's most romantic stays.
Ella grew slowly along the railway line built in the early 20th century to serve the tea estates. It remained a quiet farming and tea community until travelers began to discover its landscapes in the last two decades.

Ella's small cafes cater to hikers with hearty breakfasts of hoppers and egg curry, while family-run kitchens serve rice and curry built around whatever the surrounding valley yields that week -- pumpkin, bean and brinjal curries with a fiery lunu miris relish. Freshly plucked tea from the surrounding estates is offered everywhere, often with a spoonful of local honey.
Travel tips
- Book the train seats in advance — this is the most beautiful section of the highland line.
- Trails can be slippery after rain; proper footwear is important.
