For more than a thousand years, Anuradhapura was the seat of Sinhalese civilization — a great city of temples, palaces, monasteries and reservoirs. Today it remains one of the most important sacred sites in Buddhism.
Anuradhapura's ruins spread over a vast, tree-shaded landscape best explored by bicycle or private car with a specialist guide. Colossal white stupas rise from the plains; ancient bathing pools mirror the sky; and at the heart of it all stands the Sri Maha Bodhi — a tree grown from a cutting of the tree beneath which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
Founded in the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura became one of the largest cities of the ancient world. Its sophisticated water engineering — vast reservoirs and canals — supported a civilization that lasted more than a millennium.

Villages around the sacred city serve dry-zone rice and curry -- pumpkin, jackfruit and dhal curries tempered with curry leaf and mustard seed -- often prepared without onion or garlic near the temple precincts out of religious observance. Freshly cut king coconut and seasonal fruit are sold along the roads leading into the ancient city.
