At 1,868 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya sits in a highland basin surrounded by rolling tea estates. Its cool climate, half-timbered cottages and manicured gardens earned it the nickname 'Little England' — a landscape unlike anywhere else on the island.

Once a British hill retreat, Nuwara Eliya remains a quiet, well-mannered town of golf courses, tea rooms and pastel-painted bungalows. Just beyond it, endless emerald tea gardens climb toward the country's highest peaks and finest waterfalls.

Discovered by British officers in the 1820s and developed as a health resort, Nuwara Eliya became the summer capital of Ceylon's colonial elite. When the coffee plantations failed, tea replaced them — and shaped the highlands as they appear today.

Local food & flavours

Highland kitchens make the most of cooler-climate produce -- leeks, carrots and beans finding their way into rich, mildly spiced curries alongside estate-grown tea served strong and milky. A bowl of curd with kithul treacle, made from the sap of the fishtail palm, is the classic Nuwara Eliya dessert, and colonial-era hotels still serve a proper afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches and scones.
