Horton Plains

The high plateau at the edge of the world

Overview

AboutHorton Plains

At more than 2,000 metres, Horton Plains is a wind-swept plateau of montane grassland and cloud forest — home to the dramatic viewpoint known as World's End, where the land falls away nearly a kilometre to the plains below.

The classic loop hike takes you across grassland streams, into pockets of ancient forest, and out to two great escarpments — Little World's End and World's End — before descending past the roar of Baker's Falls. In the early morning it is otherworldly; by mid-morning mist often rolls in.

Named after a 19th-century British governor, Horton Plains was declared a national park in 1988. Its unique high-altitude ecosystem is home to endemic species found nowhere else.

Local food & flavours

There is little dining within the park itself, so most visitors breakfast beforehand in Nuwara Eliya or nearby estate bungalows on hoppers, egg curry and hot, milky tea. After the hike, a bowl of curd and kithul treacle is a fitting way to warm up in the highland chill.

Travel tips

  • You must be at World's End before 9:30am — after that, mist typically obscures the view.
  • Warm layers and rain protection are essential.
