Scenic Train Journey

The stretch of Sri Lankan railway from Nanu Oya to Ella is regularly named among the most beautiful train journeys in the world — a slow, blue-painted procession through tea gardens, mountain tunnels and cloud-forest glades.

The blue-and-yellow carriages of the 9:45 from Nanu Oya pull out past tea pluckers already at work, their baskets slung from a strap across the forehead, fingers moving along the bushes almost too fast to follow. The track climbs and curves through country that seems designed for a train window — the land falling away into ravines lined with tree ferns, waterfalls appearing and vanishing behind cuttings, the temperature dropping and lifting as the line rises past 1,800 metres and back down again. Around Ella, the train slows for the Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era viaduct built without steel — legend has it entirely of stone, brick and cement, after a wartime steel shortage — spanning a green gorge that has become one of the most photographed spots on the island. Passengers lean from open doorways, a small and long-tolerated tradition here, as the carriage sways gently through tunnels cut straight through granite. By the time the train pulls into Ella station, the light has usually turned gold, throwing long shadows across the platform and the tea rows beyond it. It is a journey best taken slowly, with nowhere particular to be — the sort of travel that has become rare, and is treasured here precisely because the railway, more than a century old, has never needed to hurry.
