The great processional festival of the Buddhist world — how to see it well.
The Esala Perahera is one of the great processional festivals of the Buddhist world — ten nights of drummers, dancers, fire-twirlers and elaborately dressed elephants winding through the streets of Kandy in honour of the sacred tooth relic housed in the city's temple.
When It Takes Place
The festival is held annually, typically in July or August, timed to the Esala full moon according to the traditional lunar calendar. Exact dates shift each year, so confirming them well in advance is essential to building a trip around it.
What the Procession Involves
Each night builds in scale toward the final, grandest procession. Expect dozens of caparisoned elephants — including, on the final nights, one believed to carry a replica of the sacred relic casket — alongside traditional Kandyan dancers, fire performers, drummers and whip-crackers who clear the route ahead of the parade.
Where to Watch From
Roadside viewing is free but extremely crowded, and standing for several hours is genuinely demanding. We arrange reserved seating on private balconies or purpose-built stands along the route — a considerable difference in comfort, especially for older travelers or families with children.
Practical Considerations
- Book accommodation in Kandy many months ahead; hotels sell out well before the festival dates are even confirmed
- Arrive at your seating well before the procession begins, as roads close early
- Evenings run late, often past midnight on the final nights
- Daytime processions on the final two days offer a gentler, less crowded alternative to the night parades
Beyond the Ten Nights
If your dates don't align with the festival itself, Kandy's Temple of the Tooth holds daily puja ceremonies that offer a smaller, still moving glimpse of the same devotion. The Perahera is a singular experience, but Kandy rewards a visit at any time of year — the Perahera is simply its most spectacular expression.
