What to Pack for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's range of climates — tropical coast, cool highlands, humid jungle — means a packing list needs a little more thought than a single-beach holiday. Here is the short, practical version we give every traveler before departure.

Clothing for the Lowlands and Coast

Lightweight, breathable fabrics are essential for the coast and the Cultural Triangle, where humidity and heat are constant. Natural fibres — linen, cotton — outperform synthetics here. Pack more than you think you'll need; laundry is inexpensive and widely available, so you rarely need to overpack, but a change of light clothing each day makes hot afternoons far more comfortable.

A Warm Layer for the Hills

Nuwara Eliya and Ella can be genuinely cool in the evenings, particularly between December and February. A light jacket or wool layer, packed near the top of your bag, is easy to forget and sorely missed on a chilly highland evening.

Temple-Appropriate Dress
