Arugam Bay is one of Asia's great surf destinations — a long, right-hand point break that draws surfers from around the world between May and September. Beyond the surf, it is a place of empty beaches, lagoons and hidden temples.
The main point break is joined by a string of other quality waves along the coast — Peanut Farm, Whiskey Point, Elephant Rock. Between sessions the region reveals its wilder side: Kumana National Park, lagoon safaris, and the extraordinary ancient site of Kudimbigala.
Long a fishing community with strong Tamil and Muslim heritage, Arugam Bay's transformation into a surf destination began in the 1970s and has evolved carefully in the decades since.

Arugam Bay's surf cafes serve a relaxed mix of grilled seafood, fresh juice and rice and curry spreads drawing on the strong Muslim and Tamil influence of the region, including biryani and dhal curry.
