East Coast

Trincomalee

One of the world's finest natural harbours

Overview

AboutTrincomalee

On the northeast coast, Trincomalee combines white-sand beaches, a magnificent natural harbour and the sacred cliff-top Koneswaram temple — an ancient site set high above the Indian Ocean.

Trincomalee has been fought over for its harbour for centuries. Today it is a quiet, sun-drenched region of coral reefs, expansive beaches at Nilaveli and Uppuveli, and superb snorkeling around Pigeon Island. From May to September, when the south coast is wet, the east coast is at its best.

Sacred to Hindus and coveted by every seafaring power to reach the island, Trincomalee was a Portuguese, Dutch and British stronghold in turn. The Koneswaram temple has been rebuilt on the same headland since ancient times.
