Ayurveda & Wellness

An ancient tradition of healing

Overview

About thisexperience

Sri Lanka has one of the oldest continuous traditions of Ayurveda in the world — and today the island offers some of the most respected wellness retreats in Asia.

We can build a short two- or three-day wellness break into any itinerary, or design a full retreat with medical consultation, personalised treatments, yoga and a curated diet. Every property we recommend is chosen for the seriousness of its practitioners and the care of its setting.

A consultation with an Ayurvedic physician here rarely feels transactional. Pulse taken at the wrist, questions asked about sleep, digestion, temperament — the aim is to understand your particular constitution, or dosha, before any treatment is proposed. It is a diagnostic tradition that predates modern medicine on the island by well over two thousand years, still practised with the same attentiveness in family-run clinics and dedicated retreat centres alike. Treatments themselves are unhurried by design. A synchronised herbal oil massage, or abhyanga, performed by two therapists working in careful rhythm, is followed by a steam treatment that opens the pores to the oils already absorbed. Shirodhara — a thin, continuous stream of warmed oil poured across the forehead for upwards of thirty minutes — has a strange, almost hypnotic effect that most first-time visitors don't expect. Meals during a retreat are calibrated rather than restrictive: warm, freshly prepared, built around what your particular constitution needs to find balance. The setting matters as much as the treatment. Many of the island's serious wellness properties sit above quiet coastline or beside slow rivers, chosen deliberately for stillness — because Ayurveda, at its root, treats rest itself as part of the cure, not an afterthought to it.

What to expect

  • An initial consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic physician to assess your constitution and needs.
  • A personalised treatment plan, which may include oil massage, herbal steam and specific therapies.
  • Daily yoga or breathing sessions tailored to your programme and physical condition.
  • Meals designed around your dosha, prepared fresh with minimal spice or oil as advised.
  • A closing consultation reviewing your progress and guidance for continuing at home.

Insider tips

  • Longer programmes (10 days or more) tend to show more noticeable results than short breaks.
  • Disclose any medical conditions honestly during your consultation so treatments can be adjusted safely.
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals for a day or two before a serious retreat begins, if you can.
  • Pack loose, comfortable clothing — oil treatments are not compatible with tailored or delicate fabrics.
