Sri Lanka's festival calendar is one of the richest in Asia — from the illuminated processions of Vesak and Poson to the Kandy Esala Perahera, one of the great pageants of the Buddhist world.

The Kandy Esala Perahera builds over ten nights, growing in scale each evening until the final processions fill the streets around the Temple of the Tooth with fire-dancers, whip-crackers, drummers and a hundred or more elephants dressed in illuminated cloth, the largest of them carrying a replica of the sacred relic casket beneath a canopy of lights. The noise and colour are considerable, but what stays with most visitors is the discipline beneath the spectacle — troupes that have rehearsed these exact routines, in some cases, for generations. Vesak, marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing, transforms towns and cities in a gentler register — homes and streets strung with paper lanterns, elaborate illuminated pandals depicting scenes from Buddhist scripture, and free food stalls, or dansal, set up by ordinary households for any traveler who happens to pass. It is one of the few times of year when the whole island seems to slow down and turn communal at once. Getting the timing and positioning right for either festival matters enormously — the Perahera's best viewing points along the main route are claimed hours in advance, and Vesak's most impressive illuminations vary by town and year. A guide who tracks the calendar closely can make the difference between watching from a packed pavement and a reserved, unobstructed vantage point.
