Warm-water waves on two coasts
Overview
About thisexperience
Sri Lanka is one of the great year-round surf destinations — the south coast breaks between November and April, and the east coast between May and September.
Whether you're a beginner learning at Weligama's gentle beach breaks or an experienced surfer at Arugam Bay's world-class point, we arrange lessons, board hire and quiet beachside stays around your sessions.
Weligama Bay at dawn has the unhurried rhythm of a beginner surf town — boards laid out in rows on the sand, instructors wading out with new students before the wind picks up, the long, forgiving beach break rolling in at a pace that gives you time to think before you stand. It's one of the most consistent, low-pressure places in Asia to learn, and most first-timers are up and riding, however briefly, within a lesson or two. Arugam Bay is a different proposition entirely. The right-hand point break here, working best from May through September, is regularly ranked among the finest in the Indian Ocean — long, peeling walls that give experienced surfers a genuinely world-class ride, with a laid-back fishing-town atmosphere onshore that has changed less than you might expect given the reputation. Between sessions, the coastline itself does the rest of the work — palm-lined beaches on both coasts, warm water year-round, and a slower pace of life that seems to have grown up specifically around the surf schedule. Whichever coast you choose, the ocean here rewards more patience than aggression, and a good instructor will tell you as much before you've even picked up a board.
What to expect
- A briefing on conditions, board choice and safety before entering the water.
- For beginners, guided practice on gentle whitewash before attempting to catch open-face waves.
- For experienced surfers, a session at a recognised point or reef break suited to your level.
- Video or photo review of your session with some instructors, useful for spotting technique issues.
- Quiet beachside downtime between sessions, timed around tide and wind conditions.
Insider tips
- Beginners should choose Weligama's inner bay, not the more powerful breaks further along the coast.
- Reef shoes are worth packing for Arugam Bay, where some breaks sit over coral or rock.
- Check the seasonal coast — south from November to April, east from May to September — before booking.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard will save you from serious sunburn on longer sessions.
